BEMIDJI -- In a marathon of a home-opening doubleheader for the Bemidji High School baseball team, there was plenty of time for drama. The Lumberjacks hosted East Grand Forks at the BSU baseball field Tuesday, but, after 6 hours, 20 minutes of deep at-bats, never-say-die comebacks and 43 total runs, BHS had 12-11 and 12-8 losses to show for it.
BEMIDJI -- Down to its last out in a 7-2 ballgame, the Bemidji State baseball team rallied to bring the tying run to the plate on Saturday against Northern State.
BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji High School softball team came through in the clutch on Thursday. The Lumberjacks scored seven two-out runs against Grand Forks (N.D.) Central, making nearly a dozen laps around the bases for an 11-4 win at Chet Anderson Stadium.
BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji High School boys tennis team needed all hands on deck for its match against Perham on Tuesday -- even before the action began. “It took a total team effort just to play our match today,” BHS head coach Mark Fodness said. “We had almost the entire team shoveling off four courts for several hours on Monday, and (Tuesday) it was more shoveling and a lot of work trying to get the courts dry. The grounds crew from BHS was also a tremendous help.”
BEMIDJI -- Gracie Fisher was standing on deck when Hibbing intentionally walked Evette Morgan to load the bases in the fourth inning on Tuesday. One pitch later, Fisher was standing at home plate. After a grand slam and a jog around the bases. “They got intimidated by Evette, so they walked her,” Fisher said. “I went up to bat, not knowing what to do. I didn’t have time to prepare. I just hit the ball.”
BEMIDJI -- Five months removed from the best season in program history, the Bemidji State women's soccer team topped Division I North Dakota 1-0 Monday night in an exhibition at Chet Anderson Stadium. Melanie Peltier's early strike was the difference, as her goal from distance proved to be the eventual game winner.
BEMIDJI -- Jess Burlingame quit. At just 10 years old, the future Bemidji State softball standout walked away from the game because people kept saying she wasn’t good enough. “It started when I was pretty young,” Burlingame said of the negativity she faced. “I quit between the ages of 10 and 13, which, at that point, is still a big growing time. … I wasn’t having any fun when it happened.”
BEMIDJI -- If only for a day (for now), baseball has returned to town. The Bemidji State baseball team finally filled its own dugout on Wednesday, marking the first time the Beavers have been able to play on their home field this season. And, as the icing on the cake, they topped Upper Iowa 2-1 and 8-5 for their first sweep of the year.
BEMIDJI -- For the second time in as many weeks, the Bemidji High School track and field team was at Bemidji State’s Gillett Wellness Center, this time for the Beaver Relays on Tuesday. “That’s kind of what we’re looking at: meet two, just to see where we are from meet one,” BHS girls head coach Chris Lehman said. “We worked on a lot of technique with the athletes.”
BEMIDJI -- Kaidron McClafferty found paradise inside the circle on Saturday. “It’s like heaven,” the freshman pitcher said of the groove she was in. “When you’ve got (your offense producing), and you’re making the pitches you want to make, it’s just heaven.” Behind McClafferty’s easy-going complete game, the Bemidji State softball team upended Minnesota State Moorhead 3-1 to avenge an 8-7 loss in the first game of a doubleheader at Chet Anderson Stadium.
