MINNEAPOLIS -- Amir Coffey scored 21 of his 29 points in the second half and the Minnesota Golden Gophers defeated the visiting Rutgers Scarlet Knights 88-70 in Big Ten action Saturday, Jan. 12, in Minneapolis. Jordan Murphy recorded a double-double for the Golden Gophers with 15 points and 16 rebounds. He was 9 of 11 from the line. Dupree McBrayer scored 12 first-half points and finished with 15 points and nine assists. Minnesota (13-3, 3-2) has won seven of its last eight. Rutgers (8-7, 1-4) lost its fourth straight road game.
ST. PAUL -- Jason Zucker scored twice and goalie Devan Dubnyk made 26 saves as the Minnesota Wild kicked off a two-game homestand by clinging to a 3-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday night, Jan. 10. Dubnyk was especially strong during the third period, as the Jets registered 13 shots. By comparison, the Wild -- who have won four of five games -- didn't register a single shot in the final frame.
BOSTON -- Tuukka Rask made 24 saves for the shutout, and Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand each had three points as the Boston Bruins earned a 4-0 win over the visiting Minnesota Wild on Tuesday, Jan. 8. The Bruins extended their winning streak to a season-high five games, and won for the 16th time in 21 home games this season.
A central Florida man was arrested Monday for posting threats against the family of Tyler Trent, the Purdue University superfan who died of cancer on Jan. 1. The Volusia County Sheriff's Office said John Matthew Pinkham, 39, was arrested at his Deltona, Fla., home and charged with making written threats to kill or injure, a felony.
MONTREAL -- Devan Dubnyk made 32 saves for his first shutout of the season as the visiting Minnesota Wild earned a 1-0 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Monday, Jan. 7. Mikael Granlund scored the game's only goal, breaking the deadlock after almost 47 minutes of scoreless hockey. The goal was Granlund's 12th of the season, and it snapped a 15-game scoreless drought for the center. Dubnyk improved to 9-1-1 with a 1.90 goals against average in 11 career games against Montreal, with two shutouts.
Cody Parkey's missed field goal that sunk the Chicago Bears on Sunday is no longer a straight-up miss. The NFL made a scoring change on Monday, crediting Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Treyvon Hester with a block on the play that gave the Philadelphia Eagles a 16-15 victory over the Bears in the NFC wild-card matchup. Slow-motion video of the play showed Hester's raised left hand barely tipping the football as it made its ascent.
KAPALUA, Hawaii -- Xander Schauffele tied the course record with an 11-under-par round of 62 on Sunday to win the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Maui, Hawaii, on Sunday, Jan. 6. Schauffele's final-round 62 was the low round of the tournament by three shots on The Plantation Course at Kapalua Resort. The 2017 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year opened with a bogey, but reeled off four birdies and an eagle to make the turn in 6-under 31.
MINNEAPOLIS -- J eff Teague contributed a pair of 3-pointers to a game-opening, 15-1 run on Sunday afternoon, Jan. 6, that paved the way for the host Minnesota Timberwolves to post a 108-86 rout of a Los Angeles Lakers' squad missing LeBron James. Teague finished with 15 points and a game-high 11 assists, while Karl-Anthony Towns added a double-double of his own with 28 points and a game-high 18 rebounds for the Timberwolves, who swept a two-game homestand that began with a win over Orlando on Friday night.
BALTIMORE -- The visiting Los Angeles Chargers sacked Lamar Jackson seven times and held on for 23-17 win over the Baltimore Ravens in an AFC wild-card game on Sunday, Jan. 6. Mike Badgley kicked five field goals, Melvin Ingram had two sacks and Melvin Gordon scored the Chargers' touchdown. Philip Rivers was 22 of 32 for 160 yards. The Chargers led 23-3 before the Ravens scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns and had a chance to take the lead.
DALLAS -- Dak Prescott guided two fourth-quarter touchdown drives as the Dallas Cowboys rallied to defeat the visiting Seattle Seahawks 24-22 Saturday night, Jan. 5, in the NFC wild-card round. Ezekiel Elliott rushed for 137 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries, while chipping in four catches for 32 yards. Prescott completed 22 of 33 passes for 226 yards and a touchdown and also scored the decisive TD on a 1-yard run with 2:08 remaining.
