WRESTLING: BHS takes fourth at Rick Lee Invite

BEMIDJI -- Following a perfect 3-0 day on Friday, the Bemidji High School wrestling team’s luck turned upside down Saturday. Facing three ranked opponents, the Jacks lost to Class AA No. 5 Perham 44-12, Class A No. 2 Frazee 34-21 and Class AA No. 10 Litchfield 38-32.

With the final match against Litchfield knotted at 32-all with only the heavyweight bout left, Dragons junior Chase Liestman pinned BHS junior Kaleb Beam to take the win.

Lumberjacks winners in the match included Jon Solum (138) and Hunter Schoenborn (220) by fall, Seth Newby (113) and colton Hinrichs (152) by major decision and Nate Golden (145), and Chance Hinrichs (170) by decision. Nic Geiger also claimed the 182 bout via forfeit.

In Saturday’s opener against Perham – the tournament’s eventual undefeated champion – the Hornets jumped ahead with four straight wins and didn’t look back. Bemidji claimed just three matchups, including a Darren Roth pin in the 132 bout and wins by decision from Solum (138) and Chance Hinrichs (160).

The Jacks’ middle match against Frazee was a back-and-forth battle, but BHS couldn’t get the pins needed to keep up on the scoreboard.

Nate Golden (145), Chance Hinrichs (160) and Peter Moen (195) won by major decision, while Newby, Solum and Schoenborn won by decision, but they were no match to Frazee’s three pins.

Bemidji returns to the mat when it hosts Badger-Greenbush-Middle River at 7:30 Friday, Jan. 12, at Bemidji High School.
