WRESTLING: Jacks take second at Brainerd Invite

BRAINERD -- The Bemidji High School wrestling team had five top-three finishers and five fourth-place finishers at the Paul Bunyan Invitational to place second as a team on Saturday in Brainerd.

BRAINERD -- The Bemidji High School wrestling team had five top-three finishers and five fourth-place finishers at the Paul Bunyan Invitational to place second as a team on Saturday in Brainerd.

Seth Newby led the way by going 3-0 in the tournament to take the top spot in the 113-pound weight class. He defeated Landon Byer of Frazee and Jake Novack of Chisago Lakes by fall, and then also pinned White Bear Lake’s J.J. Andress in 3 minutes, 24 seconds in the championship.

Nic Geiger (182) went 4-0 on the weekend, defeating Moorhead’s Brady Behrens and Foley’s Christian Halverson by decision Friday and coming back Saturday to pin Luke Girtz of Pierz. He then lost the championship match to Grant Litke of Little Falls in a 4-3 decision.

Chance Hinrichs (160) also finished second in his weight class, winning 5-2 in the semifinals before falling 7-3 to Ben Schmalz of Mound Westonka in the championship match.

Taking third place for the Jacks were Jon Solum (145), Colton Hinrichs (152) and Hunter Schoenborn (220), while Bryce Golden (120), Nate Golden (145), Alan Wouri (152), Peter Moen (195) and Kaleb Beam (heavyweight) each took fourth.

The Jacks are back on the mat Tuesday for a 6 p.m. dual at Detroit Lakes.
