MELROSE -- The Bemidji High School wrestling team began its season with a win Friday in its first meet of the season. The Lumberjacks recorded 170 points to finish two points ahead of Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg at the nine-team Melrose Early Bird Invitational.
Five Lumberjacks advanced to the first-place matches in their weight classes with Bryce Golden (120 pounds) and Nic Geiger (182) winning class titles. Golden won by pin in 5:55 over Patrick Hesse of Sartell-St. Stephen, while Geiger won by pin in 3:35 over Rocori’s Ben Primus.
Jon Solum (145), Hunter Schoenborn (220) and Kaleb Beam (285) each took home second-place finishes. Darren Roth (126), Alan Wuori (152), Chance Hinrichs (160) and Peter Moen (195) all finished in their third place in their respective divisions.
The Lumberjacks will compete in their first home meet of the season on Thursday, Dec. 7, with a triangular against Perham and Thief River Falls at 5 p.m. at the BHS Gymnasium.
