COLUMBUS, Ohio - After five straight losses to Ohio State - dating back to the 2013-14 season - the Bemidji State women’s hockey team finally beat the Buckeyes.
Hamma Moher and Bailey Wright scored for the Beavers as they beat OSU 2-1 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action on Friday night at the OSU Ice Rink. It was BSU’s first win in Columbus since Nov. 8, 2013.
The Beavers (9-2-2, 6-2-1 WCHA) struck early in the first period, when Moher scored with an assist from Kaitlyn Tougas at the 2 minute, 28 second mark.
After a scoreless second period, Wright scored what proved to be the game-winner at the 5:14 mark of the second, assisted by Ivana Bilic. It was the first goal in a Bemidji State uniform for Wright, who transferred from Minnesota Duluth last season.
OSU’s Dana Rasmussen pulled the Buckeyes (4-5-0, 2-3-0 WCHA) to within one with just less than four minutes to go in the game, but BSU and junior goaltender Brittni Mowat shut the door to earn the win despite being shorthanded for two of the final three minutes of play.
Mowat, who is three wins away from tying BSU’s all-time record of 41, earned the 38th victory of her career with 21 saves.
The teams return to the ice at 1:07 p.m. today for the series finale.
