Women's hockey: Beavers fall to Huskies

BEMIDJI -- Despite a big edge in shots and scoring opportunities the BSU women's hockey team couldn't find a way to get a win. The Beavers fell to St. Cloud State 3-1 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action Friday night at the Sanford Center.

BEMIDJI -- Despite a big edge in shots and scoring opportunities the BSU women's hockey team couldn't find a way to get a win.

The Beavers fell to St. Cloud State 3-1 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action Friday night at the Sanford Center.

BSU (8-11-2, 5-9-1 WCHA) outshot the Huskies 45-31 in the game but their only goal was a first-period Kristine Grenier tally that took a strange bounce off St. Cloud goaltender Julie Friend and in. It was Grenier's fifth goal of the season.

After that it was the Huskies (4-16-3, 2-12-2 WCHA) that got the bounces.

Abby Ness scored St. Cloud's next two goals -- the first at the 3 minute, 47 second mark of the second period and the next at the 9:48 mark of the third -- to give St. Cloud the lead.

Molli Mott sealed St. Cloud State's win with an empty-net goal with under 20 seconds to go in the game.

BSU goaltender Brittini Mowat took the loss for BSU, making 32 saves for the Beavers while Friend made 44 saves to earn the win.

The teams return to the ice at 4:07 p.m. this afternoon for the series finale.
