CHASKA -- The Chaska Invitational was the last challenge for the Bemidji High School volleyball team before the Section 8-3A tournament, and the Lumberjacks used it as a last opportunity to improve prior to their first playoff contest.

The Jacks went 2-2 on the day Saturday, losing to Class 3A No. 1 Champlin Park (26-2) 25-19, 25-11 and Mayer Lutheran (18-9) 25-19, 25-21 in pool play before defeating Winona (11-14) 25-19, 25-16 and Cretin-Derham Hall (6-21) 25-21, 25-22.

“We finally played our game,” BHS head coach Alicia Kriens said. “We had fun, but we also did all of the little things correctly. We stayed up the whole time and just had that confidence and didn’t play scared. We played aggressive and we played our game the whole day. Even though we lost to Champlin Park and Mayer Lutheran, who are both very, very good teams, we made them really think about what they were doing with the ball on their side and set up a great defense against both of those teams and came very close to taking a set. So I was very happy with the way we played today.”

Bemidji will take an 11-16 record into the section playoffs, which start Wednesday, Oct. 24. The bracket and seedings for the tournament will be available on today.
