CROSS COUNTRY: Bemidij opens season at Shocky Strand Invite

MOORHEAD -- The Bemidji High School boys and girls cross country teams opened their season at the Shocky Strand Invitational in Moorhead on Monday, with the girls taking second place with 50 points and the boys finishing third with 53.

“We had a good day,” BHS head coach Ryan Aylesworth said. “I was happy with this being the first meet of the year. What I saw out of the kids and their performances, it was a very solid start to the season.”

For the girls, Regan DeWitt finished fourth overall with a time of 20:48.8.

Gwen Youso followed shortly thereafter in fifth (20:54.5), and Liberty Dickerson wasn’t far behind, taking seventh (21:16.6).

Kayla DeWitt finished 10th (21:41.2), while Nessa Peters took 24th (23:43.7), Sophie Morin 27th (24:23.9), Mackenzie Williams 29th (24:40.1) and Laura Thompson 30th (25:30.5).

Willmar was the lone girls team to beat the Lumberjacks, coming in first with 21 points.

On the boys side, the Jacks finished behind Moorhead’s 24 points and Willmar’s 51.

Gage Mostad was the first Bemidji runner to cross the finish line, taking fifth place (17:52.4).

Riley Berg crossed next in sixth place three seconds later (17:55.2), followed by Nicholas Youso in eighth (17:58.2) and Ethan Maish in 15th (18:25.1).

Isaak McDonald and Zac Fouquerel-Skoe finished back-to-back in 20th and 21st with respective times of 18:33.5 and 18:34.5, while Cale Newby finished 23rd at 19:13.9.

The Lumberjacks are back on the course Thursday, Aug. 30, when they head to Thief River Falls for their section preview meet. Races are set to start at 10 a.m.
