GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- Bemidji High School freshman Savannah Haugen and the duo of senior Taylor Offerdahl and sophomore Lexi Leitner each went 1-1 in day two of the Section 8AA North subsection girls tennis tournament Saturday at Choice Health and Fitness in Grand Forks, N.D.
With second place, Haugen and the doubles pair earn the second seed out of the North subsection and will face the third seed out of the South in the Section 8AA tournament next Saturday in Sartell.
In singles, Haugen breezed through her semifinal match, topping Thief River Falls sophomore Emma Fagerstrom 6-1, 6-2 before taking on Brainerd’s Britney Fletcher in the finals.
Haugen had defeated Fletcher twice during the regular season – 1-6, 6-4, 7-5 on Sept. 6 and 6-4, 6-4 in the section team tournament Oct. 4 – but she couldn’t make it three, and Fletcher came out on top with a 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4) edge.
“Savannah had won two close matches in their earlier meetings this year and this one also came down to the wire,” BHS head coach Mark Fodness said. “Savannah played well but just had a few moments where she wasn't quite as sharp and there just isn't a lot of room for error in this type of match.”
As the No. 3 seed going into the subsection tournament, Offerdahl and Leitner started their day off with a three-set win over second-seeded Khloe Lund and Bela Nelson of TRF (6-2, 2-6, 6-2).
They then went on to face the top seed, Brainerd seniors Taya Person and Heidi Jacobson, and fell in another three-set match by a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 score.
“We were outplayed in the opening set but found a winning formula in the second,” Fodness said. “I was hoping the momentum from the second set would carry forward but we just couldn't quite execute a few points and too many of our shots were directed at the opponents at the net.”
Section tournament play begins at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at Sta Fit in Sartell.
