GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The Bemidji High School girls tennis team won its first round match, 4-3, over Moorhead at the Section 8AA tournament Thursday at Choice Health and Fitness in Grand Forks, N.D., but then the Lumberjacks ran into top-seeded Brainerd and fell 6-1, ending their team season.

Bemidji (13-7) went into the tournament as the No. 4 seed and was set up to face the No. 5 Spuds on Thursday morning for its first match.

“Anytime the four and five seeded teams meet in a tournament you would expect a close match and that was certainly the case today,” BHS head coach Mark Fodness said. “Once again, all our close matches this year helped us today as we found ourselves in a familiar situation.”

The Nos. 2 and 4 singles courts were the first two to finish, with sisters Taylor (senior) and Tatum (freshman) Offerdahl each defeating their opponent in straight sets.

The Spuds came tied the match at 2-2 with wins at third singles and second doubles, but the pairing of Kylen Fenson and Chloe Hasbargen at third doubles and Savannah Haugen at No. 1 singles came up with wins to earn the victory for the Jacks.

“Kylen and Chloe were a bit nervous in the first set as they were playing their first tournament match,” Fodness said. “We were down 5-2 in the first set and then came back to take a 6-5 lead before heading into a tiebreaker. We were down 5-2 again and then won five straight points to win the set.

“In the second set we started slowly again and were down 3-1, but after that point we settled in and played our best tennis of the day and won five straight games.”

Against Brainerd, the freshman Haugen secured the Lumberjacks’ lone win at top singles, topping Britney Fletcher 6-4, 6-4.

“Brainerd is the top-seeded team for a reason,” said Fodness. “I thought we competed really well, especially early in some of the matches. I was proud of the way the girls came out with a lot of energy and focus.”

Bemidji is back on the Choice Health and Fitness courts starting at 9 a.m. today for the Section 8A North individual tournament.
