BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji High School girls tennis team utilized a four-match sweep in singles play to defeat Hibbing/Chisholm 5-2 Friday afternoon in Bemidji.
“We split the four matches that went into third sets and that was the difference for us,” BHS head coach Mark Fodness said.
Savannah Haugen and Aftyn Schmidt picked up straight-set wins in first and third singles to start things off. Tatum Offerdahl rebounded from a first-set loss to win in fourth singles before Paige Anderson and Chloe Hasbargen prevailed in three sets in third doubles to clinch the match with four straight victories.
“Paige and Chloe had a hiccup in the second set and let Hibbing back into the match but they responded really well and played their best set of the day in the third,” Fodness said. “Again, it's just a matter of learning with experience and hopefully this was another step forward today.”
Taylor Offerdahl went on to claim victory in three sets in second singles, and Hibbing picked up wins in first and second doubles to bring the match to a close.
The victory improves the Lumberjacks to 4-5 on the season.
Bemidji will next host a quadrangular Tuesday, Sept. 11 against Detroit Lakes, East Grand Forks and Staples-Motley on the BHS courts beginning at 10 a.m.
