GIRLS TENNIS: Doubles sweep hands Jacks first win

BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji High School girls tennis team swept all three doubles matches against Eveleth-Gilbert on Thursday at Bemidji Middle School, leading the Lumberjacks to a 4-3 win for their first of the season.

“Our doubles teams really helped us out today,” BHS head coach Mark Fodness said. “Nettie Kimball saw her first varsity action of the year and she teamed with Chloe Hasbargen for the first time and the girls put together a nice win and earned our first point of the day at third doubles.”

In addition to the Kimball-Hasbargen duo’s win over Kada Ceglar and Cassidy Jarvella, Hannah Nelson and Lexi Leitner defeated McKenna Edstrom and Megan Larson at No. 1 doubles 6-1, 7-6 (7-4), and Bethany Chatterton and Aftyn Schmidt topped Julia Lindseth and Anna Beaudette 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.

“(Chatterton and Schmidt) have great chemistry on the court and they have sometimes struggled with slow starts, but today they came out ready to go from the first point,” said Fodness.

Freshman Savannah Haugen was the lone singles winner for the Lumberjacks (1-2) with a 6-4, 6-3 win over E-G senior Audrey Delich.

“Savannah was down a game in both sets but she came back and earned a huge win for us today,” Fodness said. “I was especially impressed with her ability to finish the second set with some aggressive shots and she really kept the pressure on her opponent. Playing at first singles is going to be a learning experience and today was a good step forward in that process.”

At second singles, BHS junior Taylor Offerdahl lost two close sets to eighth grader Lydia Delich 6-4, 7-5.

Freshman Tatum Offerdahl beat Katelyn Torrell 6-4 in set one at third singles, but Torrell responded with a 7-4 tiebreak win in set two and took the third set tiebreak 10-5.

In her first look at singles for the season, freshman Paige Anderson dropped the No. 4 matchup 6-2, 6-1 to E-G senior Ashley Kuopus.

The Lumberjacks return to action at noon today to take on Hibbing at BMS.
