BOYS TENNIS: Bemidji keeps rolling in DL
DETROIT LAKES -- The Bemidji High School boys tennis team improved to 11-1 on Tuesday with a 5-2 road victory over Detroit Lakes.
Nic Buffo led the way at first singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win, and Spencer Konecne followed at the No. 2 spot with a 6-1, 6-0 win.
“It was nice to see Spencer make short work of a match that had gone into a third-set tiebreaker early in the season,” BHS head coach Mark Fodness said.
Wyatt Harrom and Bailey Harris rounded out the Lumberjacks’ singles sweep -- Harrom winning 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 at No. 3 and Harris winning 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4.
“Wyatt had to work hard to earn a win today but he battled and came up with just enough key points,” said Fodness. “He used his slice backhand effectively and held serve just enough to give us our fifth point… It was nice to see Bailey follow up with a strong second set after playing well in the first set.”
Gabriel Hanninen and Pedro Lacasa led the Lakers to a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 1 doubles, and the Trey Seebold-Tanner Doppler duo followed suit at No. 2 doubles with a 5-7, 7-5, (10-8) comeback.
Ben Hess and Kolden Michalicek added a tally to the BHS win column, though, serving up a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 3 doubles to help the Jacks to the 5-2 victory.
BHS will return to action at noon Thursday, May 3, for the Northwest Quadrangular in Crookston, which also features East Grand Forks and Thief River Falls.
