PEQUOT LAKES - After a perfect 2-0 start in the first week of the season, the Bemidji High School tennis team carried it over into week two with two more wins on Monday.
The Lumberjacks (4-0) went to Pequot Lakes for a tri-meet where they beat Little Falls 7-0 and Pequot Lakes 6-1.
“The girls played well today even though conditions were difficult with very strong and gusty winds,” said head coach Mark Fodness. “In our first match it was nice to be able to sub in some girls who gained valuable experience.”
Junior Shelby Eichstadt and freshman Laura Palmer played singles No. 3 and No. 4 respectively against Little Falls after playing the first week of the season in doubles play.
Eichstadt won 3-6, 6-1 (7-4) while Palmer won 6-0, 6-1.
“Shelby probably benefited the most as she got off to a slow start in her singles match and then raised her game up a level and came away with the win,” Fodness said.
Fodness went back to his original singles lineup with senior Nikki Anderson-Weir and junior Olivia Jones at No. 3 and No. 4 against Pequot Lakes.
Sophomore No. 1 Abbie Kelm and senior No. 2 Alexis Konecne both remained at their spots for both matches.
“Pequot Lakes has a very nice lineup with all seniors in singles,” Fodness said. “They really pushed us which was great to be in some competitive matches. I thought Nikki played her best match of the year to this point.”
In doubles play, No. 1 sophomore Sam Edlund and freshman Taylor Offerdahl won 7-5, 6-2 against Pequot Lakes after beating Little Falls 6-1, 6-0.
Senior Adriane Rickert and Eichstadt won No. 2 doubles 6-1, 6-3 against Pequot Lakes after junior Emily Serratore and senior Sydney Ewert won No. 2 doubles against Little Falls 6-1, 6-0.
Palmer went back to doubles against Pequot Lakes as well and she, along with junior Kate Langerak at No. 3 doubles, won 6-4, 6-4. Juniors Hope Puro and Sarah Bofferding won No. 3 doubles against Little Falls 6-3, 6-3.
“Sam and Taylor were down 2-5 in the first set (against Pequot Lakes) and came roaring back for the win,” Fodness said. “We were a little tentative at times at third doubles but they stepped up at the end. Second doubles had a really strong performance as they never really let their opponents get started.”
The Lumberjacks will be back on the court at 2 p.m. Wednesday when they return home for two more matches with Grand Rapids and East Grand Forks.
