TENNIS: Lopez-Simo earns player of the week honors after BSU sweep

BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji State tennis team swept Wisconsin-River Falls 7-0 Sunday afternoon to end the 2019 regular season on Senior Day at the Gillett Wellness Center.

BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji State tennis team swept Wisconsin-River Falls 7-0 Sunday afternoon to end the 2019 regular season on Senior Day at the Gillett Wellness Center.

Seniors Zoe Lindgren and Breann Walsh were honored before the team’s final home match.

The Beavers grabbed an early 1-0 lead by claiming all three doubles matches to earn the first point of the day. Lindgren and Hannah Alme took the No. 1 doubles match 6-2, Laney Rutkowski and Ariadna Lopez-Simo prevailed 6-1 in the No. 2 match and Breann Walsh and Brooke Mimmack rolled to a 6-0 win at No. 3 doubles.

In singles play, Lindgren and Walsh swept their opponents, 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 1 and 5 spots, respectively. Lopez-Simo won 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 2 match, Alme 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3, Mimmack 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 and Peterson 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6.

Lopez-Simo brought home NSIC Player of the Week honors Monday for her performance on the weekend. The junior from Barcelona, Spain, went 2-0 in both singles and doubles play in a pair of 7-0 BSU wins.

BSU won seven of its final eight matches to end the regular season at 11-6 overall and 6-5 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play.

Bemidji State will now prepare for the NSIC Tournament in Minnetonka this weekend. The seventh-seeded Beavers will face second-seeded Minnesota State Moorhead in the quarterfinals at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 13. The semifinals and final are set for Sunday, April 14.
