SWIMMING: Lumberjacks compete at Section 5A True Team meet

ALEXANDRIA -- The Bemidji High School boys swimming and diving team took fifth place at the Section 5A True Team meet Saturday at Alexandria Area High School. The Lumberjacks earned one top-five finish and seven top-10 finishes to help them to 997 team points.

Sartell-St. Stephen blew away the competition with 1,746 points, 258 ahead of second-place Melrose-Sauk Centre.

For the Jacks, junior Sam Hendricks took fifth in the 200 freestyle race with a time of 1:59.62, and he also secured seventh in the 100 backstroke (1:01.84).

Senior Gabe Goodwin also had a pair of top-10 finishes as an individual, taking sixth in the 100 butterfly (1:01.63) and ninth in the 50 freestyle (24:48).

Goodwin, Hendricks, Nikita Graves and Luke Yartz teamed up for sixth place in the 400 freestyle relay (3:37.02), and Goodwin, Hendricks, Graves and Haakan Thorsgard finished the 200 medley relay in 1:54.71 for 10th place.

Taking ninth in the 500 freestyle race was Yartz, stopping the clock at 5:35.54.

The Lumberjacks will be back in the water Tuesday, Jan. 23, for a 5:30 p.m. meet at Fargo South.
