The amazing winning string of the Grand Forks Red River tennis team reached 130 this week when the Roughriders captured the North Dakota East Region championship with a 4-1 win over Fargo South. Red River (10-0) has won 11 straight North Dakota state titles. It reached the final with 5-0 wins over West Fargo and Grand Forks Central.

Hill to Hall of Fame

Hib Hill of Robbinsdale is one of five new coaches set for induction into the Minnesota State Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame Nov. 1 at St. Louis Park.

The others are Dale Champ of Elbow Lake, Louis Mitteco of Totino Grace, Randy Taylor of Martin County West and Dave Vanderwerf of Dawson-Boyd.

Chisholm's legendary Bob McDonald will be recognized for reaching the 900 victory total and the Minneapolis Star-Tribune's .John Millyea will be presented with the MBCA Ambassador of Basketball Award


Hill began his coaching career at Red Lake in the late 1950's joining Swede Hedman and Larry Erie on the Warriors staff. Erie, whose father coached at Robbinsdale, directed Hill to that school in1960.

Erie, who spent a long career with the State Department of Education, has retired to his Dellwater Lake home just south of the Reservation.

Trail grooming

The weekly trail grooming by the Bemidji Area Cross Country Ski Club will take place next Saturday at the Buena Vista trails with Mike Huerbin as the weekly project manager. Worked should meet at 9 a.m. for three hours of cleaning the trail of brush to get it ready to be groomed for the winter.

Next week the grooming will shift to the Hobson Trail under John Bastien. Workers who would like to volunteer but cannot work these hours should contact the trail steward to make other arrangements.

This is an annual project for the club to keep the trails in shape and also earn money from Grant-in-Aid funds for club projects.

The grooming will continue through Oct. 24.

Football fan bus


The Bemidji Football Boosters Club will sponsor a fan bus to Fergus Falls Friday for the next Jacks road game.

The charter will depart and return to the high school. It will be filled on a first come, first served basis.

The cost is $20 for adults and $16 for students.

Polls and standings

Shakopee, Jackson County Central and Bethlehem Academy top the weekly volleyball poll.

Bemidji and Alexandria dropped to 14 and 15 in the Class A 3A rankings.

Hibbing is tied for seventh and Wadena ninth in 2A with DGF and Esko getting votes.


Northern Freeze is fourth, Bertha-Hewitt fifth, Baudette eighth and Deer River ninth in Class A with Nevis Ada, Win-E-Mac and Sebeka drawing votes.

No northern teams made the top ten in 2A tennis.

In cross country, Moorhead is fifth and Alexandria 11 in 2A boys and Moorhead fifth and Grand Rapids ninth in 2A girls.

Lukas Gemar of Moorhead and Jamie Piepenburg of Alex still top the individual poll.

Stillwater and Sartell top the 2A and A swim rankings with Fergus Falls sixth in Class A.

Its Apple Valley and Totino Grace topping the boys 2A and A soccer rankings with St. Cloud Cathedral fifth and Duluth Marshall 10 in Class A.

Woodbury and Benilde lead the girls AA and A standings with East Grand Forks drawing votes in Class A.

Wayzata (5A), Mankato West (4A), Glencoe (3A), Caledonia (2A), New Ulm Cathedral (A) and Kittson Central (9 man) are the football division leaders this week.

Northern schools are conspicuous by their absence in the larger divisions with Sartell sixth in 4A, Perham fifth and Staples ninth in 3A and DGF seventh in 2A.

In Class A, Fosston is third and Chisholm sixth while Stephen-Argyle is second, Verndale fourth, Ada fifth, Cromwell sixth and MIB eighth in nine man .

Area leaders are Brainerd fronting the early 8-5A grid standings.

DGF and Perham front the Heart O Lakes divisions.

Detroit Lakes leads Bemidji by one point in the Lakes to Prairie boys soccer standings. Crookston is a distant third.
