BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji Special Olympics softball team will make its long awaited return to the field on Thursday.

The team is set to scrimmage members of the Bemidji Church Softball League at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 18, at the BSU softball field. It’s the Bemidji Special Olympic softball team’s first scrimmage since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Bemidji Special Olympics softball team is unable to attend the regional Special Olympics softball competition later this month. As a result, the team sought out an opportunity to compete in a game locally.

The organization reached out to Bemidji Church Softball League co-directors Eric Nelson and Jake Kangas, who recruited members across their 12-team league to face off against the Special Olympics team.

The church league playoffs finished on Aug. 11 with Bemidji First Assembly of God’s Blue Team winning its second consecutive championship.

Bemidji Special Olympics, which is part of Special Olympics Minnesota, organizes athletes, volunteers, unified partners and coaches to provide inclusive year-round sports training and activities to children and adults with intellectual and physical disabilities in the Bemidji area.
