SOFTBALL: Hunters rally on BHS with walk-off winner
DULUTH -- One Samantha Snyder swing put an abrupt end to a last-inning lead for the Bemidji High School softball team on Thursday.
The Duluth Denfeld sophomore hit a walk-off, three-run home run to sink the Lumberjacks into a 13-12 loss in Duluth.
The Hunters rallied with a five-run inning in the bottom of the seventh, coming back to win a game in which BHS (3-3) once had a 12-5 lead.
Denfeld got on the board first when Gianna Torres homered for 3-0 lead in the first inning, but then Bemidji started to rack up runs.
Anikka Takkunen, Katie Alto and Evette Morgan all scored in the third, and Morgan homered in a four-run fourth inning shortly after. The scoreboard kept active, as the Jacks soon expanded their lead to 11-5 through five.
BHS tacked on a run from Maddie Hanson in the top of the sixth before the Hunters put up three in the bottom half. Bemidji still had a 12-8 advantage with three outs to go, but Snyder belted her walk-off blast with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.
Bemidji will look to recover during a doubleheader against Grand Rapids and Hermantown, starting at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 27, in Grand Rapids.
