SOFTBALL: Pagel breaks RBI record in U-Mary sweep

BISMARCK, N.D. -- A pair of fifth innings avalanched on the Bemidji State softball team on Wednesday.

U-Mary put up eight runs in the fifth frame during both games of a doubleheader, turning ties into 9-1 and 13-5 losses in Bismarck, N.D.

The sweep officially eliminated the Beavers from postseason play and a spot in the 10-team Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament.

Despite the defeats, however, senior Makayla Pagel set a new single-season program record with her 40th RBI of the season. Her 102 career RBIs are also three shy of tying BSU’s all-time record, set by Lyndsey Peterson from 2013-16.

In game one, Brooke Phillips homered to left center in the first inning to provide the Beavers (22-28, 5-21 NSIC) with an early 1-0 advantage. The Marauders (21-25, 12-14 NSIC) wiped it away with an RBI single in the third, setting up a tie going into the fifth.

Kylie Alto clubbed a grand slam in the middle of the rally to make it a 7-1 game. And later, Kasidy Chileen singled in two more -- her second RBI knock of the inning -- for a game-ending hit due to the run rule.

Stephi Dullum took the loss in the circle, going 4 1/3 innings and giving up seven runs (six earned) on six hits while walking four and striking out three.

Game two followed a similar script.

Bemidji State put up three runs in the first inning to jump ahead early, starting with Pagel’s RBI single for her 40th RBI of the season. Rochelle Koshalek followed by scoring Phillips on a groundout, and then Olivia Tucker cracked a double that plated Pagel.

Elaina Christiansen joined in during the second inning, bringing in Sami Trana with an RBI groundout that gave the Beavers a 4-0 lead.

U-Mary responded with five runs in the bottom of the second, but Burlingame homered in the fourth to tie the game back up at 5-all.

Things quickly got out of hand in the fifth frame, though, when the Marauders posted another eight-run inning -- all without recording an out. Chileen put an end to the game with a two-run triple that stuck BSU with another run-rule loss.

Koshalek pitched 2 1/3 innings of relief, taking the loss after surrendering eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits.

Bemidji State’s season will wrap up within the week after a pair of weekend doubleheaders, starting with a twinbill against Wayne State at noon on Saturday, April 27, at the BSU softball field.
