SOFTBALL: Bemidji State falls to Peacocks, No. 17 Warriors
FOREST CITY, Iowa -- The Bemidji State softball team couldn’t keep up with its first nationally ranked opponent of the season.
The Beavers fell 10-4 and 9-0 in a doubleheader against No. 17 Winona State in Forest City, Iowa, on Monday, which came a day after a pair of losses to Upper Iowa in Fayette, Iowa, on Sunday.
The Warriors (33-5, 18-0 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) piled up runs early. Winona State had 10 by the end of three innings of game one, and Bemidji State (22-20, 5-13 NSIC) couldn’t respond until Lexi Derrick and Rochelle Koshalek singled in runs in the fourth.
Makayla Pagel also picked up RBIs with a fifth-inning sacrifice bunt and a seventh-inning single, but it wasn’t enough in the 10-4 loss.
The Beavers’ offense went cold in game two, but the Warriors torched BSU pitching. Jen Giesey hit a grand slam four batters into the second inning, and Alexis Kelsey followed with a bases-clearing double later in the frame for a 7-0 lead.
Winona State stockpiled more runs with a tally in the third and fifth innings, which set up the final score in the run rule-shortened affair.
Despite the losses, senior Brooke Phillips became Bemidji State’s single-season doubles leader after clubbing her 17th in game one, and she then added another two-bagger in game two.
Against Upper Iowa (20-13, 12-6 NSIC) on Sunday, the Beavers lost a 7-1 decision in game one before a scoreless pitchers’ duel in game two brought on extra frames.
Koshalek spun seven scoreless innings in the finale, but she ran into trouble in the eighth and got tagged with the game-deciding run of the 1-0 loss.
Senior Jess Burlingame swiped her 17th base of the season in game two against the Peacocks, giving her sole possession of the program’s single-season record.
BSU will return to action at noon on Tuesday, April 16, for a doubleheader at Minnesota Duluth.
