SOFTBALL: BSU suffers heartbreak in twinbill losses

MINOT, N.D. -- Minot State pulled off some walk-off heroics to claim a sweep over the Bemidji State softball team in Minot, N.D., on Wednesday.

MiSU needed 12 innings to push past BSU in a 6-5 opener, and a three-run seventh set up the home Beavers to win 11-10 in the finale.

Minot State (19-12, 8-6 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) held a 2-1 lead through four innings of game one, but Bemidji State (22-16, 5-9 NSIC) piled up four runs in the fifth to jump ahead. Jess Burlingame roped an RBI triple while Makayla Pagel and Brooke Phillips belted RBI doubles to highlight the frame.

However, MiSU got three runs back in the bottom half, tying the game at 5-all. Nobody cracked the scoreboard again until the 12th, when Lauren Cowden eventually singled in Maggie Mercer for the walk-off winner.

In game two, the BSU bats came alive once again. Kelsey McAllister scored a pair with a first-inning single, and Pagel and Phillps hit back-to-back RBI doubles in the second frame.

Minot State answered with a five-spot in the bottom of the second, but a run in the fourth and five more in the fifth set up Bemidji State with a 10-7 lead.

MiSU got a run back in the fifth inning, but BSU still was three outs from victory entering the seventh. Minot State had other plans, though, as a two-RBI single for Julia Suchan preceded a walk-off Mercer sacrifice fly.

Weather permitting, Bemidji State will hope to correct course at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 13, in a home doubleheader against Upper Iowa at Chet Anderson Stadium.
