ST. CLOUD -- The Bemidji State softball team struggled at the plate Tuesday afternoon, falling in a doubleheader sweep to St. Cloud State by scores of 12-0 and 2-1.
The Beavers only mustered four hits in the twinbill that was moved to St. Cloud’s Husky Dome due to inclement weather in Bemidji.
The Huskies (22-10, 4-4 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) tallied 12 runs on 12 hits in the first game of the day, which ended after six innings due to the 10-run rule.
Following a scoreless opening two innings, SCSU broke the game open with four runs in the third before adding one on a fifth-inning solo shot and erupting for seven runs in the top of the sixth. Husky pitchers held the Beavers (20-12, 3-5 NSIC) to two hits on the game.
Stephi Dullum was saddled with the loss after pitching five innings and allowing five runs on eight hits with three strikeouts. Megan Pehrson pitched one inning of relief and conceded seven runs on four hits with two strikeouts.
The second game turned into a pitchers’ duel between Bemidji State’s Rochelle Koshalek and St. Cloud State’s Kylie Thomsen and Sydney Lapoint. Again, the Beavers only connected for two hits off the pair, while the Huskies managed to plate two runs on five hits.
Both SCSU runs came in the top of the third off of sacrifice hits that made it 2-0. Makayla Pagel belted a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth for the team’s lone run of the afternoon.
Koshalek pitched all seven innings and allowed two runs on five hits with six strikeouts in the loss.
Bemidji State will hope to put its bats to work this weekend as the Beavers look to end their four-game losing streak with home doubleheaders against Minnesota State Moorhead and Northern State this weekend. Saturday’s twinbill against MSUM is set for 1 p.m., while Sunday’s against NSU is scheduled for noon.
