SOFTBALL: Broncos ace snuffs BHS offense
INTERNATIONAL FALLS -- When Mariah Leahy hit a two-RBI single and came in to score herself for a 3-0 International Falls lead on Wednesday, it was more than enough room to work with from the pitching circle. She cruised through a five-inning three-hitter, using 12 strikeouts to top the Bemidji High School softball team 10-0.
After the first inning, the Broncos (13-4) kept building the lead with one run in the third, three in the fourth and three in the fifth for the mercy-rule victory.
All nine batters in the Jacks (11-7) lineup went down on strikes at least once, while Emma Stanoch, Maddie Hanson and Makenna Quinn were the only three to tally hits.
Stanoch and Hanson went back-to-back with their hits with a single and a double, respectively, but Quinn followed with a punchout to strand them each in scoring position.
Gabbi Takkunen took the loss as the starting pitcher for the Lumberjacks, allowing 10 runs (nine earned) on 12 hits, one walk and one hit batter while striking out one over five innings.
Bemidji is back on the field at 3 p.m. today when they travel Grand Rapids for a doubleheader at the Grand Rapids Sports Complex.
