SOFTBALL: Beavers split Tuesday contests

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Bemidji State softball team edged St. Thomas Aquinas 2-1 Tuesday for its fourth straight victory at the Spring Break Tournament in Clermont. Fla., but the streak didn’t last long as the Beavers went on to lose to Millersville 7-4 later in the day.

The Spartans (1-9) broke the scoreless tie early when Ashley Landolina hit a solo home run in the top of the first inning, but that would be all they would muster.

BSU junior Jessica Burlingame walked to lead off the bottom of the first and came around to score on an Alexandria Ripka groundout and tie the game at 1-1.

The Beavers (6-8) then scored the eventual game winning run in the third when Makayla Pagel hit an RBI double to plate Brooke Phillips.

Megan Pehrson earned the complete game win in the pitching circle for Bemidji State, the only run allowed being the first-inning homer. She gave up five additional hits and struck out three in seven innings of work.

Against Millersville, the Beavers worked out to a 4-0 lead after three innings, but the Marauders (8-3) came back to score seven unanswered runs for the 7-4 win.

Burlingame singled and scored on a passed ball in the first inning and came up again in the second, hitting a two-out, two-RBI double to score Rachel Burkland and Megan Castor.

Kristen Monkman stretched the lead to 4-0 an inning later with an RBI single, but Millersville made its move soon after.

Two Marauder runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings erased the BSU lead, and Millersville piled on three more in the sixth to bring the game to its final, 7-4.

Stephi Dullum took the loss for BSU, allowing seven earned runs on 10 hits while striking out four in six innings.

Bemidji State looks to get right back in the win column with two games this morning, taking on Cal.-Pennsylvania at 7:30 and Millersville again at 9:30.
