MARSHALL -- The Bemidji State softball team couldn’t overcome hot bats from Southwest Minnesota State on Sunday, falling 8-3 and 11-9 in a doubleheader in Marshall.
In game one, SMSU (11-7, 6-0 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two frames. Though the Beavers (20-10, 3-3 NSIC) got three runs back in the third -- highlighted by a Kelsey McAllister RBI double -- it wasn’t enough in the five-run loss.
In the finale, it was Bemidji State who grabbed the early edge. Brooke Phillips had a first-inning RBI triple, and McAllister followed with an RBI single. Then in the second, Jessica Burlingame beat out an infield single that scored a run for a 3-0 edge.
Nevertheless, the Mustangs put up crooked numbers with four runs in the third and six in the sixth. BSU rallied for three runs in the seventh, but the comeback fell short in the 20-run slugfest.
The Beavers return to action at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, for a doubleheader against St. Cloud State in St. Cloud.
