SOCCER: Nelson’s goal delivers BSU season-opening win
MINOT, N.D. -- With time running out, senior Dani Nelson buried a goal in the 89th minute Thursday afternoon to give the Bemidji State soccer team a 1-0 victory over Oklahoma Baptist at Herb Parker Field in Minot, N.D. The Woodbury native skipped a free kick past the OBU goalkeeper to capture the season-opening win for the Beavers (1-0-0).
After a scoreless first half, BSU controlled play for most of the second, out-shooting the Bison 6-2 in the final 45 minutes. The pressure would pay off for the patient Beavers as Nelson was awarded a free kick from 28 yards out. After skirting the OBU wall, the ball skipped past the outreached hands of goalkeeper Emily Griffith and into the back of the net.
BSU edged the Bison 11-4 in shots, and held a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Senior goalkeeper Anna Fobbe was perfect for the Beavers, turning aside each of the four shots she faced to collect the 22nd win of her career and her first shutout of 2018.
Bemidji State will return home next week to Chet Anderson Stadium for the team’s home and conference opener. The Beavers will take on Minnesota Crookston at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, to begin the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference season.
