BEMIDJI - After going 8-6-1 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference in 2014, the Bemidji State women’s soccer team was once again picked for a top-of-the-table finish in 2015.
The Beavers, who placed seventh in the 16-team Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference a season ago, were picked to finish sixth this year by NSIC coaches in a poll released Thursday.
BSU head coach Jim Stone’s Beavers were also picked to finish sixth overall in 2014.
BSU returns 20 players for the 2015 season, which includes five 2014 All-NSIC picks and its top six goal scorers.
One of those goal scorers, junior forward Sarah Stram, was picked as one of BSU’s “Players to Watch” by league coaches along with senior defender Abigail Nyquist.
Stram, was a 2014 All-NSIC first teamer. She had 12 goals, which was best on the team and fourth in the league.
Nyquist, was a Third-Team All-NSIC selection. She was a key player in a defensive effort that allowed just 1.22 goals per game and posted five shutouts. Nyquist also chipped in offensively, setting up four goals and serving as the team’s primary pick for corner kicks.
Minnesota State Mankato garnered 223 points and 14-of-16 first-place votes to lead the coaches’ poll while Winona State and Augustana each received one first-place vote to finish second (204) and third (193), respectively.
BSU opens its 2015 regular season Sept. 3, when it hosts Augustana for an NSIC contest. The match will be held in conjunction with BSU’s Community Appreciation Day. Admission to the Beavers’ home-opening match is free.
