CALLAWAY -- The Bemidji High School Nordic skiing teams were in action on Thursday in Callaway, with the girls placing third and the boys fourth at the Detroit Lakes Invite.
The teams skied a continuous pursuit of 4.5 kilometers of a classic race directly followed by 4.5K of skating.
Mary Beth Mathews was the top Lumberjack finisher on the day, placing third overall for the girls with a time of 34:02.9. Close behind was Regan DeWitt, who came in seventh in 35:15.6.
Not far off the leaders, Ella Simula was 10th (35:55.9) and Kate Martin 13th (36.38.8) to round out the team score.
Liliana Schaeffer of Brainerd earned medalist honors with a time of 31:58.2. Her Warriors also topped the field as a team with 381 points, edging Moorhead (374) and Bemidji (371) in a crowded top three.

In the boys race, Louis Morrissey secured a top-10 spot for the Lumberjacks by placing seventh in 30:51.3. Seth Lindgren (31:26.3) and Jack Mueller (31:49.4) respectively followed in 13th and 15th, and Bryce Kondos wrapped up the team score by taking 26th in 33:56.7.
Zaine Braaten of Moorhead was the individual winner, clocking a time of 28:14.6. The Brainerd boys were also victorious as a team, tallying a score of 382. Bemidji’s 343 points trailed Little Falls (373) and Moorhead (346), as well.
The Jacks will be back on home snow with an invitational at Buena Vista Ski Area on Saturday, Jan. 22.
