CURLING: US men inch closer to playoff spot
STAVANGER, Norway -- Team USA’s Cory Christensen (Duluth) and John Shuster (Superior, Wis.) knocked off previously undefeated Spain 8-5 on Wednesday at the 2019 World Mixed Doubles Championship in Stavanger, Norway.
The win moves the Americans to 6-0 in Group F and one step closer to securing a playoff spot.
All that stands in their way is Russia (5-1), who Team USA will face Thursday, April 25, to close out round-robin play. Russia is tied with Spain for second place in the group standings.
The top two teams in each of the six groups qualify for the Round of 16 playoffs, as do the four third-ranked teams with the best Last Stone Draw results.US women clinch playoff berth
The U.S. women earned their playoff spot in the 2019 World Senior Championships with a 9-4 win against Lithuania, completing their fifth straight win and moving to 5-1 in the Group A standings.
Margie Smith (Shoreview) and teammates Norma O’Leary (Silver Bay), Debbie Dexter (St. Paul) and Shelly Kosal (Edgerton, Wis.) next face undefeated Canada today to finish off round-robin play.
The U.S. men, meanwhile, improved to 3-1 with a win over Latvia. Geoff Goodland (Eau Claire, Wis.) and his team of Todd Birr (Ham Lake), Mike Fraboni (Lac du Flambeau, Wis.), Pete Westberg (Woodbury) and Dan Wiza (Waunakee, Wis.) wrap up the round robin today against Wales.
