NORDIC SKIING: Jacks open season at Grand Rapids Invite
GRAND RAPIDS -- The Bemidji High School Nordic skiing team kicked off its season at Mount Itasca Winter Sports Center in Coleraine for the Grand Rapids Invitational on Thursday.
The format of the meet was a sprint relay where teams of two skiers collectively raced across six kilometers.
“I think overall we were really pleased with the way the kids skied,” said BHS head coach Mark Walters. “... It was a really good experience for the kids. It was pretty high intensity because it’s a sprint relay.”
In the girls event, Gwen Youso and Kinley Prestegard captured first place for the Lumberjacks with a time of 17:26 in the 14-team field.
Following the first-place duo for Bemidji were Demi Fisher and Lily Krona in fourth (18:03), Sara Pollock and Alyse Stone in ninth (19:13) and Shanna Eberwine and Maggie Brown in 12th (21:30).
On the boys side, Logan Jensen and Nick Youso posted the top time for the Lumberjacks by finishing in second place with a mark of 14:54.
Following Jensen and Youso for BHS were Zac Fouquerel-Skoe and Nathan Vleck in 12th (16:31) and Riley Schollett and Hayden Hommes in 15th (19:01).
The Ely duo of Jasper Johnson and James Schwinghamer took the top prize with a first-place time of 14:34 to lead the field of 16 teams.
The Lumberjacks will return to action Tuesday, Dec. 11 for a skate race at Detroit Lakes Mountain.
