Rydell National Wildlife Refuge is hosting events for children in the area this summer including an introduction to archery day, a fishing day, and an owl pellet dissection seminar starting on Saturday, July 16.
A week ago was the annual Bemidji Area Take A Kid Fishing event. This event has been going on for over 30 years and is a real treat for the kids and all the volunteers.
Small in size and common nearly everywhere, the hooded merganser, or “hoodies” as some affectionately call them, are interesting behaving and looking waterfowl to be sure.
Due to Minnesota’s waterways being extraordinarily busy this holiday weekend, the Minnesota public safety officials are stepping up to keep people safe on the water as a result of Operation Dry Water.

Neither Lake Ida or Lake Charley northwest of Alexandria are stocked with muskies by the Minnesota DNR, but a connection to Lake Miltona means some of the big fish make their way in. Park Rapids native Tayden George has quite a fish story to tell after landing a muskie near 50 inches long while fishing the channel that connects the two lakes.
Events are planned throughout the month of July at Lake Bemidji State Park.
Warm water temperatures are just around the corner as we head into July later this week and will be even warmer as we get closer to August.
