The Bemidji Northern Heat 11-year old baseball team will be playing for pride when it faces Scott County, Mo. at 2:30 p.m. today in the Midwest Plains Regional tournament held in Sikeston, Mo.

The Northern Heat fell to 0-3 in pool play Monday with a 10-8 loss to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Scott County will bring a 2-1 record into today's pool play finale.

The Northern Heat took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning Monday but Saskatoon answered with seven in its half of the frame and two in the third. Bemidji drew within 9-8 with five in the fourth but could not get any closer.

"The kids battled back and we made it a game," said Bemidji coach Corey Boen. "At 0-3 we won't advance past the pool play but we'll be looking for a little redemption against Scott County."

Tony Long had an RBI single and George Loxtercamp a two-run double in the second inning. Loxtercamp added a two-run single in the fifth.

In Sunday's play Bemidji dropped to 0-2 in its pool after a 10-0 loss to Sikeston.

Jarred Sandlin sent Sikeston on its way to a victory with a three-run round-tripper in the opening inning. Sikeston cemented the win with five in the second and padded its cushion with single runs in the third and fourth innings.

Bemidji managed two hits, singles in the fourth by Dominic Evenson and Matt Fitzgerald.

"It was a tough game on the kids," said coach Corey Boen. "The kids were pretty deflated but that might have as much to do with the weather as anything else. It was 95 degrees and the heat index was 105 degrees. The weather down here has just sapped the kids."
