HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The odd schedule didn’t seem to faze the Bemidji State men’s hockey team. Two days after defeating Alabama Huntsville 4-1 in a rare Wednesday conference opener in Huntsville, the Beavers and Chargers hit the ice again for the WCHA series finale on Friday night. The result was exactly the same.BSU junior goaltender Reid Mimmack allowed just one goal and stopped 16 shots in his third-consecutive start, and the Beavers beat the Chargers by an identical 4-1 score in Friday night’s game at the Von Braun Center.
It was the second-straight victory for both Mimmack and the Beavers, who improved to 4-6-3 overall and 3-5-2 in the WCHA. It was also the first series sweep for BSU this year.Senior Cory Ward, senior Graeme McCormack, freshman Justin Baudry and junior Charlie O’Connor each scored for the Beavers, while Chad Brears scored the lone goal for UAH.Neither team managed to score in the first period despite a 12-5 BSU shots advantage, and even in the second the teams couldn’t get anything going offensively until late in the period, when Ward broke the scoreless tie with an even-strength goal at 16 minutes, 6 seconds. The Beavers took a 1-0 lead into the second intermissions - just the second time all year that BSU has gone into the final frame with a lead. Until Friday, they were 0-1 in games where they entered the third period with the lead. The Chargers (3-8-1, 2-7-1 WCHA) tied the game at 7:04, but McCormack answered right back 15 seconds later with what turned out to be the game winner.Baudry, a freshman, gave the Beavers some insurance less than three minutes later when he scored his first collegiate goal to make it 3-1.UAH pulled goaltender Carmine Guerriero with just less than two minutes to play but O’Connor’s empty-netter ended any Chargers comeback hopes.O’Connor, who added two assists, finished the night with a team-high three points. Harms also had two helpers while Baudry finished with a goal and an assist. The Beavers are back in action next Friday and Saturday when they travel to Big Rapids, Mich., for another WCHA series against Ferris State.HUNTSVILLE, Ala.
