WOMEN'S HOCKEY: BSU wins 3-1 to split Mercyhurst series
ERIE, Pa. -- The Bemidji State women's hockey team finished its nonconference series against the Mercyhurst Lakers with a win by a score of 3-1 Saturday afternoon.
The scoring started when Lindsey Featherstone scored her third goal of the season at 18:44 of the first period. The Lakers (8-7-1, 6-2-0 College Hockey America) responded at 13:52 of the second period with a goal by Emma Nuutinen.
The Beavers (5-13-1, 4-7-1 Western Collegiate Hockey Association), however, would find the back of the net twice in 1 minute, 51 seconds. The two goals were scored by Emily Bergland at 17:28 of the second period for her third goal of the season followed by Paige Beebe at 19:19 of the period, tallying her fourth goal of the season.
Bemidji continued to be strong on the penalty kill as they held the Lakers scoreless on their three power-play attempts.
After this strong performance, the Beavers penalty kill improved its streak to 22 straight penalty kills. The Beavers’ penalty kill is ranked sixth in the nation with a 90.2 kill percentage.
The Beavers were also backed by a strong goaltending performance by Kerigan Dowhy who made 25 saves and ended with a .962 save percentage. This is Dowhy’s third win of the season as she improves to 3-7-0.
The Beavers split the weekend series with the Lakers and improve to 5-13-1 on the season.
Bemidji State will now begin the holiday break and return to action Jan. 4-5 to host Union in a nonconference series.
