TORONTO -- Former Bemidji State star Matt Read has signed a professional tryout (PTO) contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs, the team announced Friday.
Read, 33, played in 12 NHL games with the Minnesota Wild last season, but spent most of the year with the AHL’s Iowa Wild. The forward notched one goal with Minnesota, while posting 37 points (16g-21a) in 61 games with Iowa.
The former BSU captain spent seven seasons (2011-18) with the Philadelphia Flyers after signing with the team as an undrafted free agent. His best offensive season came as a rookie in 2011-12 when he tallied career highs in points (47), goals (24) and assists (23).
A native of Ilderton, Ont., Read has amassed 188 points (88g-100a) in 449 career NHL games. The only BSU product to appear in more NHL games is Joel Otto (943 games).
Read led the Beavers to two NCAA Tournament appearances and a trip to the Frozen Four during his four years (2007-11) in Bemidji. His 143 career points as a Beaver rank first in BSU’s NCAA Division-I era, as do his 65 goals. His 78 collegiate assists are the second-most in the program’s Division-I era.
