BRAINERD -- Two members of the Bemidji High School gymnastics team are headed to the Class AA state meet after their performances at the Section 8AA Meet on Saturday in Brainerd.
Sophomore Lauren Lundquist qualified for state on beam, as did freshman Tatum Offerdahl on bars.
As a team, the Lumberjacks took fourth place at Saturday’s meet with 140.65 points, finishing behind section champion St. Cloud Tech (142.7), Brainerd (141.6) and Elk River/Zimmerman (140.7).
Offerdahl recorded the top all-around score for the Jacks with her score of 35.55 to finish sixth. St. Cloud Tech’s Kaija Ludewig took first with all-around score of 37.05.
Having been ranked as one of the top teams in the section for much of the season, Bemidji was left a little disappointed by the result.
“Overall, it didn’t go the way we were hoping necessarily,” head coach Briana Fleischhacker said. “It wasn’t our best meet, and the end result wasn’t what we were hoping for, obviously. But there were some really good things that happened for sure, some highs and some lows throughout the day.
“We’re very excited for our girls who qualified as individuals, and we’re already thinking about what we need to do to improve for our next season.”
Offerdahl posted a 9.15 on bars to place second in the event and earn a state-meet berth. Lundquist scored a 9.2 on beam to finish fourth in the event, securing a trip to state. The top three gymnasts in each event, along with the top three all-arounders, qualify for state.
Lundquist and Offerdahl each made their first state-meet appearances last season, and will now go back for a second straight year.
The Class AA individual state meet is set for 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at the University of Minnesota’s Maturi Pavilion in Minneapolis.
