BEMIDJI -- Clint Cornell sits alone at the top of the leaderboard in the men’s championship division after the first day of play concluded Saturday at the 51st annual Vandersluis Memorial Golf Tournament. The Bemidjian shot a 2 under par 70 to begin the 54-hole stroke play tournament at Bemidji Town and Country Club.
Just one shot back of the leader are Derek Harris, of West Fargo, N.D., and Chad Skarperud, of Fargo, N.D. They each ended the day with scores of 71.
Brad Anderson, of Staples, and Alex Barrett, of Bemidji, finished the round at even par with scores of 72 to round out the top five.
In the senior men’s championship, Trent Wilcox was the lone golfer to break par Saturday. The Park Rapids native finished one under par with his round of 71.
Eden Prairie’s JT Johnson and Bemidji’s Jeff Wiltse are each one shot back of Wilcox following rounds of 72. Bob Cavanagh, of Perham, and Barry Romo, of Grand Forks, N.D., each shot 73 to round out the top five.
Staples’ Glen Hasselberg and Fargo’s Lee Petersen share the lead in the masters division. The pair recorded rounds of 77 to finish 5 over par.
Bemidji’s Ron Olson sits four strokes back of the leaders in third place after his 81. Bemidjians make up the rest of the top five with Ron Jacobson in fourth (82), and Tom Conzemius and Jay Forney tied for fifth (86).
Jacob Skarperud, of Fargo, leads the junior division halfway through the tournament after his first-round 77.
The Vandersluis continues today with tee times beginning at 8 a.m. The junior division wraps up today, while the other divisions will be decided Monday, Sept. 3.
