BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji State football team has found its starting quarterback.

Brandon Alt was named the starter Saturday, and will be under center for the Beavers when the season starts Thursday, Aug. 30. The redshirt freshman had competed for the job with junior Jared Henning over the last three weeks in camp.

“He’s put together quite a fall camp, and guys are rallying behind him,” offensive coordinator Karson Pike said. “He’s made a lot of smart decisions and not turned the ball over, so he’ll be the guy we’re going with.”

After sitting out last year, Alt will see his first collegiate action this week. As a high schooler, the Cottage Grove native passed for 5,621 yards and 53 touchdowns in three years as the starter at Park High School. That includes a senior season that saw the 6-foot-2, 200-pound signal caller throw for 2,021 yards and 22 touchdowns, while rushing for 467 yards and 10 touchdowns.

“He has a really strong arm that allows him to make a ton of throws down the field in tighter windows, and all those sorts of things,” Pike said. “Sometimes in really tight coverage he’s able to fit it in. That certainly helps him with some of the stuff we’re asking him to do in the offense.”

Pike said he believes Alt can be a threat in the run game as well.

“He’s still pretty athletic,” Pike said. “He can run around when we need him to, and to get out of the pocket when the time comes for that, and make some throws on the run, as well as with his legs.”

As a junior, Henning is the more experienced of the two, having played in 19 games over the last two seasons after redshirting in 2015. The Jackson, Wis., native has completed 15 of 28 career passes for 140 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Henning has also rushed 320 yards for four touchdowns.

“Jared was very understanding and excited for Brandon,” Pike said. “Those two have a good relationship, and so it’s been a friendly, competitive battle throughout. Jared was excited for him, and obviously Brandon was excited as well and honored to be the guy.”

The Beavers will open the 2018 season against Northern State this Thursday at Chet Anderson Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
