Eden Prairie wins state championship

Eden Prairie and Lino Lakes were scheduled to meet Monday in the championship game of the state Legion baseball tournament in Eden Prairie but heavy rain forced officials to cancel the contest and declare Eden Prairie the state champion.

The host team was unbeaten in the double-elimination event with a 4-0 record while Lino Lakes worked its way to the title game by winning three games in the loser's bracket and finished 6-1.

Both teams advance to this week's Legion Central Region tournament in Dickinson, N.D.

Bemidji also was in the 16-team field but lost its first two games, falling to Lino Lakes 7-3 and to New Ulm 13-2.

Sauk Rapids, which Bemidji defeated to capture the District 6 title, finished third at the state meet.

Sauk Rapids opened with a 4-2 victory over Burnsville and downed Fergus Falls 10-5 and Hermantown 14-11.

Eden Prairie defeated Sauk Rapids 10-5 in the winner's bracket final. In the loser's bracket final, Sauk Rapids lost to Lino Lakes 5-4.
