BLAINE - The team skipped by Riley Fenson of Bemidji has moved on to today’s championship round of the 2016 U.S. Youth Olympic Team Trials for Curling at the Four Seasons Curling Club in Blaine.
Fenson’s team, which also includes cousin Graem Fenson of Bemidji, Christine McMakin of St. Paul and Allison Howell of Bentleyville, Ohio, will be taking on the Luc Violette rink of Lake Stevens, Wash., in the title round, which will take place at 9 a.m.
However, there is a two-loss provision in place meaning that any team that qualifies to this secondary round with an undefeated record has to be beaten twice in order to be officially eliminated. So, if needed, a second final could be played at noon tomorrow.
Violette’s team kept its perfect record intact with an 8-4 win today over Chase Sinnett’s team from Boston (2-3).
Fenson’s team finished the round robin in second place with a 4-1 record after defeating Eli Clawson’s team, 6-3. The lone loss of the tournament for Fenson came on day two against Violette’s Washington squad.
The six U.S. teams, composed of two girls and two boys ranging in ages from 14 to 17, are vying for the coveted spots on Team USA at the 2016 Winter Youth Olympic Games this February in Norway. The teams are playing a single round robin with a championship round to follow on Sunday.
A live webstream of the championship final this morning, as well as live scores, are available at www.usacurl.org .
