BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Bemidji State women’s soccer team has consistently challenged itself in nonconference play against Division I opponents. Last season, that led to a celebrated 2-0 victory over North Dakota.
The results weren’t as auspicious this time around. The Beavers traveled to play South Dakota State in Brookings, S.D., on Sunday and struggled to match the Jackrabbits, conceding one goal in the first half and two in the second in a 3-0 loss.
The defeat snapped BSU’s 23-game unbeaten streak in the regular season, which was a program record. It also broke Bemidji State’s seven-game win streak in season openers.
South Dakota State (3-0-1) got on the board with a top-right-corner strike by Maya Hansen in the 17th minute. The Beavers (0-1) entered the half down 1-0 and hung on for most of the second half, but two quick Jackrabbit strikes in the 81st and 82nd minutes sealed the final margin.
Bemidji State struggled to match SDSU’s chances, losing the shots battle 17-5 and the shots-on-goal battle 7-2.
