BEMIDJI -- Bemidji State softball head coach Jordan Petersen dipped into the transfer portal for a pair of pitchers, and she announced the signing of Natalie Contreras and Abby Kessel on Wednesday.

Contreras, from Georgian Court University in New Jersey, redshirted for the Lions in 2022. The freshman is a Diamond Bar, Calif., native who posted an 8-8 record with a 2.32 ERA while also batting .396 as a high school senior.

Kessel, who hails from Belfield, N.D., transfers over from Mayville State as a junior. In 2022 with the Comets, she posted a 2-4 record in 10 appearances, logging 27.1 innings and holding an ERA of 9.55.

The Beavers are coming off an 11-39 season in 2022, which was Petersen’s first as the team’s head coach.
