MEN’S BASKETBALL: Bemidji State’s John Sutherland ropes in Player of the Week

John Sutherland averaged 23.3 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists over last week’s three-game stretch. Sutherland also had a double-double of 21 points and 13 rebounds against Oak Hills Christian College, leading BSU to tie the program’s 30-year-old rebound record.

BURNSVILLE -- John Sutherland added one more accomplishment to his busy week on Monday.

The NSIC recognized the Bemidji State men’s basketball junior forward as its North Division Player of the Week after Sutherland led the Beavers to a 2-1 record.

The award is the first such honor of Sutherland’s career, and he’s the first Beaver to win the weekly honor since Derek Thompson in February 2021.

Sutherland averaged 23.3 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists over last week’s three-game stretch. Sutherland also had a double-double of 21 points and 13 rebounds against Oak Hills Christian College, leading BSU to tie the program’s 30-year-old rebound record.

Wayne State’s Jordan Janssen was named the NSIC South Division Player of the Week.

Sutherland and the Beavers are back in action with their conference opener at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 22, against Minnesota Crookston at the BSU Gymnasium.
