DETROIT LAKES -- The Bemidji High School boys tennis team won nearly every set of Tuesday’s triangular in Detroit Lakes, sweeping the host Lakers and Fergus Falls by identical scores of 7-0.
The Lumberjacks finished the day 27-3 across 30 sets of play as the team improved to 10-2 overall on the season.
Spencer Konecne, Louis Saxton and Wyatt Harrom went 2-0 in singles play, while Jonah Fuhrman and Logan Jensen each ended 1-0. The doubles teams of Ben Hess and Kolden Michalicek, Silas Hess and Michael Dickinson, and Eric Guida and Logan Mitchell also finished the day 2-0.
Konecne dropped only one set all day in two singles matches at the top of the lineup.
“We wanted to see Spencer get off to a faster start and have good focus and effort from the very first point, and he did a great job of that today,” BHS head coach Mark Fodness said.

After Saxton won in straight sets at No. 2 singles, Harrom and Fuhrman each dropped their first sets before rebounding to come out victorious in the Nos. 3 and 4 matches. Guida and Mitchell also needed a third-set tiebreaker to win at No. 3 doubles.
“The 7-0 score would indicate that our match wasn’t close today, but winning three third-set tiebreakers certainly made things more comfortable for us,” Fodness said. “Winning those close matches really pays off later in the season as the guys learn how to compete in those pressure situations.”
The Jacks went on to sweep the Otters in straight sets across all seven matches to pick up their 10th win of the season.
Bemidji is next set to compete in the Northwest Quadrangular at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 2, in East Grand Forks, where BHS will face the Green Wave, Crookston and Thief River Falls.
