Bemidji wrestling drops two matches at triangular

Badger-Greenbush-Middle River recorded pins in the final two matches and those 12 points helped BGMR edge the Bemidji wrestling team 40-30 Saturday at the BHS gym.

Earlier in the triangular St. Cloud Apollo downed the Lumberjacks 47-12.

"The kids stepped up against BGMR," said Jacks coach Rance Bahr. "That was a fun dual. It came down to the heavyweight match and when that happens it always is fun and exciting."

Bemidji opened with a 3-0 team lead as Brian Maas won a decision but the Jacks spotted BGMR a 10-3 lead after losing a decision at 113 and forfeiting at 120. Decision victories by Logan Crosby at 126, Robert Treuer at 132 and Craig Maas at 138, however, propelled BHS to a 12-10 advantage.

The teams alternated wins during the next six matches as pins by Kodi Craft, Kade Johnson and Brody Willander offset a BGMR pin and two Bemidji forfeits.

Heading into the 220-pound match BHS led 30-28 but the visitors rallied with pins at 220 and heavyweight to collect the victory, one of the forfeits coming at 182 dictated by the loss of Josh Dreyer who injured his knee during his St. Cloud Apollo match.

The dual against St. Cloud Apollo was not as dramatic as Bemidji posted only three victories. Gannon Strain registered a pin at 138, Brenden Fredrikson edged his opponent 3-2 at 195 and Alex Johnson was awarded a forfeit at heavyweight.

"The kids are making progress," Bahr said. "Apollo and BGMR are two very tough opponents and, considering our injuries, illness and some bad luck, we are performing well."

The Lumberjacks will end their home season Thursday against Pequot Lakes. On Friday the regular season will conclude with a triangular against St. Cloud Tech and Rocori at Tech.
