BROOKLYN CENTER -- The Minnesota State High School League announced Thursday new section assignments for the 2019-20 and 2020-21 school years.
Bemidji High School’s only change comes for the dance team, which will move classes from Section 4-3A to Section 4AA. All other extracurricular activities will hold the same section assignments as the current alignment, which has been set for the past two years.
The sections won’t look entirely the same, however, due to other schools moving around. In football, St. Cloud Apollo joins the Section 8-5A field to create a six-team section. In boys and girls soccer, St. Cloud Tech drops into Section 8A from 8AA.
In boys and girls basketball, St. Cloud Tech is moving into Section 8-3A, filling the vacancy left by Fergus Falls’ transition to 8AA. On the girls side, St. Cloud Apollo also moves in to create an eight-team section.
Alexandria girls hockey will replace North Wright County in the Section 8AA field. The Rocori and Sartell-St. Stephen baseball teams will move into Section 8-3A, while Fergus Falls departs it, for a six-team pool.
On the mats, Alexandria, Rocori and Sartell-St. Stephen will leave Section 8-3A, and Buffalo will enter into the now eight-team section. For gymnastics, Alexandria and Sartell-St. Stephen shift into 8AA, while St. Michael-Albertville and Elk River/Zimmerman filter out.
Fergus Falls softball is leaving behind a now six-team field for Section 8-3A, while Detroit Lakes boys tennis bumps up Section 8AA from 12 to 13 teams. On the girls tennis side, Big Lake swaps into Section 8AA for departing Thief River Falls.
Detroit Lakes girls golf will join Section 8-3A to create a 13-team field. In both cross country and track and field, Thief River Falls will leave Section 8AA. Willmar will join 8AA for cross country.
