Bemidji HS Saturday preview: Jacks basketball doubleheader against Rocori highlights schedule

The Bemidji High girls and boys basketball teams host Rocori today in a double header at the Fieldhouse, the girls kicking off the day at 1 and the boys following a 3 or 3:30.

Meanwhile the wrestling team is at Alexandria for the Section 8-3A team event and the gymnasts at Apollo for their section tournament.

The two cage teams face contrasting obstacles, The girls bring a sparkling 20-1 record to the contest to face a Spartan team that is 4-17 in last place in the Central Lakes Conference.

The boys, on the other hand, take on the CLC leaders who are 17-3 and lead the CLC at 13-1.

Coach Rick Kehoe will use his game to give his bench another heavy dose of action.


He liked what he saw in the Little Falls win Thursday when the bench scored 34 points in a 74-47 romp past the Flyers.

Freshmen Jess Yost and Kenzie Kane combined for 27 of that total, their second highest night of the year,. Selina Gilbertson added five and Maren Erpelding two.

Caitlin Gangelhoff, Summer Monsrud, Grace Felling and Jenna Sagedahl will join that group today.

Starting will be Kelsey Heisler, Kayla Hirt, Abby Hendricks, Erika Weimann and Megan Huseby.

The B Team is 8-12 and the freshmen 10-5.

Their games will be played art 3, the frosh at the Middle School.

Bemidji won last year's game 84-46 at Cold Spring.

The boys are 13-7 after wins over Alexandria and Detroit Lakes but will be hard pressed to stop the Spartans who have lost only to New London-Spicer, St. Cloud Tech and Forest Lake,


They reversed the Tech loss recently and have swept Sartell and hold wins over Brainerd and Willmar.

Last year they flattened Bemidji 64-37 at Cold Spring,'

The Jacks B Team carries a 13-7 mark to its game, The freshmen are 4-12.

That pair play at 1, the freshman at the Middle School.

Wrestlers hopeful

The wrestlers are hopeful of winning their opening match today.

They begin at 11 a.m. with Buffalo in a match of the 8-9 seeded teams.

Unfortunately, the winner advances to face top seeded and defending champion Apollo.


Apollo holds wins over Buffalo 61-10 and Bemidji 51-24 this year.

The Jacks are 5-17 in duals this year with a youthful team, that is learning under fire.

It will have only two seniors on the mat with a large number of 7-10 graders.

Next week the Jacks host the individual tournament starting Friday night and concluding Saturday afternoon.

Reserves include Nick Ness (1-12), Gary Molash (1-4), Kodi Craft (0-10), Tyler Molitor (0-0) and Nick Conner (1-13).

Other quarterfinals pit Moorhead against Willmar, Brainerd against St. Cloud Tech or Alexandria and Sauk Rapids against Rocori.


Gymnasts look up

The gym team, as always, is looking up trying to move up a step or two at the sectional.

They have never challenged with their best finishes fourth places in 2000 and 2007.

Last year, they took sixth and are likely to be in that area today.

St. Cloud Tech won last year's title at 148.8 with Brainerd second at 142.675.The remaining seven ranged from 135 to 118 with Bemidji hitting 130.925.

Its best score this year is 133,7 at the Park Rapids Invitational, a score it has not reached since.

Rachel Bell and Kati Parker will be the only seniors in action. They will be joined by sophs Katie Jensen, Nicole McDonald, Jess Bergquist, Brooke Beck, Chelsea Anderson and Tiana Stinar, freshman Alysha Moe and seventh grader Amy Carey giving the team a promising future ahead.
