The season came to an end for the Bemidji girls hockey team Saturday as the Lumberjacks dropped a 4-1 decision in the quarterfinals of the Section 8-2A tournament at Sartell-Sauk Rapids.

BHS, which entered the tournament as the fifth seed, finished the winter 13-12-1. Fourth-seeded Sartell-SR improved to 17-7-2.

The Lumberjacks held their own in the opening 17 minutes and the teams were tied 1-1 at the conclusion of the first period.

Sartell-SR opened the scoring 4:10 into the action when Caitlin Halupczok slipped the puck past BHS goalie Morgan Miller.

With 4:30 to play in the stanza, however, Savanna Hanson tied the game when she deflected home Karlee Tower's shot from the blue line.

The Stormin' Sabres regained their lead early in the second period as they scored twice in the opening three minutes of the session.

Nikki Partch connected 2:14 into the period and 40 seconds later Kendra Christiansen converted a feed from Kendra Rasmussen.

"Except for that minute early in the second period when Sartell scored the two goals it was an even game with back-and-forth play," said BHS coach Bob Brink. "At times we dictated the play and overall we more than held our own."

That spurt, however, proved decisive as neither team could score again until Rasmussen connected with 2:31 left in the game and after the Jacks had pulled Miller from the net.

"Of course, everyone is disappointed that our season is over but we had a heck of a year," Brink said.

"We had an eight-game winning streak and we earned the No. 5 seed in the section and I think we accomplished much more than many people thought we could.

"Looking back I couldn't be more proud of this team and of the effort the girls gave," Brink continued. "It was a heck of a year."
